From the album New Years Project
Lyrics
One shadow lost in darkness, hollow touch achieved in fantasy
The whisper after witching hour, entering she sees only me
Dress for a kiss
The waking, life, the dead
I told her this
You’re making your own bed
A dream of sex so thrilling without consequence, what comfort brings
I’ll never have to rehearse an apology, for tragedy
Captured, adapted, with this pinhole
Taking of your hand for all I know
Stare through my insincerity
To fulfill, yet less physical still
Risking this timeline to expose
Life in credibly invasive detail
Nothing I can hold forever

This song was one of the last songs written for the album, but began the slow shift to the type of music that we play today. There’s a nice contrast between the spacey beginning, verses, and interludes, as well as the heavy, sludgy main riff, bridge, and melodic outro – and I think we were all very pleased at how it started to sound like a song and sounded like *music*, rather than riff after riff. For the solo section, I was again inspired by Meshuggah, only not how you’re thinking! Straws Pulled At Random is an INCREDIBLE song, and the second half of the song totally takes me on a journey – the melody of the riffs, the syncopated drums, and the beautiful solo all come together, and I just sort of lose all interest in anything that’s going on around me whenever this song comes on. Naturally, I wanted to do something like that, and that’s where the solo section comes from. I remember it was really tough to get a solo together that I was happy with, as I just sort of hack away until I come up with something that sounds ok. Axel was a very big help when constructing this solo, he’s got a great ear for an idea worth pursuing and which ones to let die.
I’m also pretty happy with how the ending turned out – as I was able to finally write a riff that was directly influenced by my favorite band of all time (and also the best band in the universe), OCEANSIZE. I had taken a melody from Saturday Morning Breakfast Show and messed with it a little bit, and ended up with a riff that’s nice a melodic, and a ton of fun to play. Axel and Brendon came up with a nice little variation that they play which adds a really cool feel to the riff…the two riffs sort of push and pull against each other, timing wise, so there’s a bit of ambiguity as to where the riff really starts and ends as you listen to it.
